Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (spine sunned, corners scuffed, worn and faded). No ownership marks present. Map while present is in pieces (starting to separate at the folds) and I do not dare to open it. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. "Monstrous and ferocious ape, the gorilla." This first expedition into Central Africa, supported by the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, commenced in 1856 and lasted close to four years and covered 8,000 miles.
