  7. Beautifully carved Chokwe Mwana Pwo Mask

    Very finely carved wood mask typical of the Chokwe tribe of the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo or northern Angola. It is crowned with extensive hair (fashioned from very fine but indeterminate fibrous material) with fitted crocheted raffia coif that fits over the head. The hair is quite fragile, but both hair and coif could be easily detached for wall display. Such masks are used in initiation ceremonies and are worn by men to evoke maiden spirits. It was collected over forty years ago by a keen collector of African ethnographic art. Apart from the hair, it is in extremely good condition and probably dates from the mid-20th century. The face is 9 inches long and 7 inches wide.
