    Each hand features holes, however, I do not know the purpose of these - though these were possibly holes through which the depiction of a spear was placed through. The traces of darker colouring on the surface of the wood (as shown on the photos) might possibly be the fading of darker coloured areas - as you will see in the photos of the shield, there is a wonderful contrast of lighter and darker colours.
