A traditional West African black clay ink pot featuring geometric incised patterns and a distinct multi-spouted form. These vessels were crafted by the Hausa people of Northern Nigeria and Southern Niger for use in Quranic schools and administrative tasks. The dark, burnished finish is achieved through a specific firing process in which the pottery is smoked with organic materials. The multiple spouts often served to hold reed pens or to allow multiple users to dip into the ink simultaneously. Time period 1920-1950. Made of Clay, with a carbonized smoke finish.
