An original first edition German translation leaf from the Nuremberg Chronicle, written by Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), published in December 1493. In December 1493 only 700-1000 printings were made of the German translation of the famous Liber Chronicarum or Nuremberg Chronicle as opposed to 1,400-1,500 of the Latin printings in July 1493. The book follows world history as related in the bible, this leaf is page CXLII and shows the Italian city of Ravenna, complete with mountains and river, on the reverse side are four popes; Symmachus, Hosmilda, Iohannes and Felix with text throughout. The page has been beautifully hand colored at a later date. The publisher and printer was Anton Koberger (c.1440/5-1513), the Godfather of the famous printmaker Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). The page measures approximately 17 1/2 x 12 inches.
