Franck wurde 1743 in Thalbürgel in Thüringen geboren. Seine Großmutter Maria Dorothea Lange, geborene Vulpius, war eine Großtante von Goethes Gattin Christiane Vulpius. 1760 immatrikulierte sich Franck an der Universität zu Jena, vermutlich für das Fach der Rechte. Diesem Anlass wurde auch das Stammbuch gewidmet und begonnen.
