THE EXPLORATION DIARIES OF H. M. STANLEY EDITED BY RICHARD STANLEY & ALAN NEAME WILLIAM KIMBER; LONDON 1961 1st edition. 24 x 16 cm. 208 pp + b/w plates. HB/DJ Sir Henry Morton Stanley, G.C.B., the explorer who found Livingstone in the heart of Africa and first circumnavigated Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika, who first travelled the length of the River Congo and traced the source of the Nile, who laid the foundations of the Congo Free State and rescued Emin Pasha from the armies of the Mahdi, was not born great. In 1845, as a small waif of four called John Rowlands, he was left by his parents in the St. Asaph workhouse; the atlas at that date showed a third of the African Continent as a blank. The word 'unexplored' was printed across the map between the Sudan in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn, thousands of miles to the south.
