Yucca schidigera, known as YUCCA, is a plant belonging to the Agavaceae family, native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. The Indians recognized YUCCA as “a tree of life” with beneficial health activities. A study by Japanese researchers has shown that a fraction of YUCCA saponins have showed potent antimicrobial activity against some food spoilage yeasts. Platelet activating factor is a known inflammatory agent and YUCCA extracts have shown to inhibit its activity and enhance its degradation. Animal research also shows that oral intake of YUCCA extract reduces the concentrations of local inflammatory markers, in particular tumor necrosis factor 2 (TNF-R2) and nuclear factor kappa B. In vitro, a constituent of the bark of Yucca schidigera, has demonstrated antioxidant activity stronger than resveratrol.
