The decoration was created entirelyby hand using a fine pen or quill, making each piece slightly unique and reflecting the remarkable patience and skill required for this form of decoration. Thecondition is good, with the honest wear of over two centuries of age visible in places.

The handle was cut from a piece of seasoned sycamore with the grain running from front to back to give maximum strength. It has been left in its natural state and then given several coats of varnish.
